Last April, Somer Hollingsworth, president of the Nevada Development Authority, told the audience at the Perspective 2008 conference in Las Vegas that “Government has one business; that’s to beat the crap out of you.” Is there a businessman anywhere in the state, especially after this last legislative session, who doesn’t agree with that statement?

A number of folks have suggested that Sen. John Ensign’s infidelity problem would sideline him and, thereby, hurt the Nevada Republican Party. Which would be true….if John ever really did anything to help the Nevada Republican Party in the first place.

Get this: In Delaware (not exactly a hotbed of right-wing extremism) last week, Republicans in the House of Representatives “voted as a bloc to stop proposed tax and fee increases on alcohol, tobacco, and alcohol licenses.” Similar to Nevada, Republicans are in the minority in the Legislature there, but a 3/5 supermajority is needed to pass tax hikes.

Sun reporter Michael Mishak notes that few Republicans are openly coming to John Ensign’s defense now that he’s in deep doo-doo over sleeping with another man’s wife who also happened to work for him. He also suggested that this was a blow to the Nevada Republican Party, as Ensign had threatened to ride in on his white horse and save party organization – only to be thrown out of the saddle by his unique way of defending the sanctity of the institution of marriage.

Conservatives continue to find themselves split in the fight between FedEx and UPS over a bill to place FedEx Express drivers under the same law as every other package delivery driver. And many who are on the FedEx side are there simply because FedEx is non-union and, hey, conservatives don’t like unions, right?

Now this was funny.
I took the girls to a Daddy-Daughter Dance last weekend at the East Las Vegas Community Center. As it turns out we were the only white family in the building and had a terrific time – even though I don’t speak Spanish and didn’t understand 90 percent of what the DJ’s were saying. But we did understand that one of the contests was a Daddy-Daughter look-alike contest and the first prize was four tickets to the Ringling Brothers Circus. Count….us….in.
And wouldn’t you know it, out of some two dozen contestants, we won. I guess it’s true – and turned out to be a benefit – that all us white people look alike!
Recall the University Chancellor Jim Rogers and his minions at the Nevada System of Higher Education have been claiming for a year and a half now that there’s just nowhere to cut in the university budget. Nowhere. And yet now we hear that the president of UNLV is doing a lousy job and is married to the ghost of Marie Antoinette.
